Storm shelters for homes that do what they promise

Keeping families safe for over 25 years

FamilySAFE has been designing and manufacturing above-ground storm shelters since 1998 – long before most companies entered the market. Working directly with engineers at Texas Tech University, we built the first fully tested and certified above-ground steel storm shelter of its kind.

Since then, we’ve installed more than 30,000 FamilySAFE storm shelters in homes across the country – each one hand-built, fully engineered, and anchored with the same care we’d want for our own families. Even after 16 historic tornadoes, not a single FamilySAFE shelter has ever failed or trapped anyone inside.

We’re proud to serve homeowners throughout the United States, helping families find real peace of mind every storm season.

Why go with an above-ground storm shelter for your home?

Easy to reach when every second counts.

Underground shelters were once the norm, but they came with problems: steep steps, heavy lids, stale air, and cars parked over the entrance. During a real emergency, those obstacles can cost precious time. An above-ground tornado shelter solves those issues by bringing protection up to you, right inside your home or garage.

Certified strength, proven in EF5 tornadoes

Tested in the lab. Proven in the field. Built to protect.

FamilySAFE was the FIRST complete above-ground shelter to pass every test at Texas Tech University’s Wind Science Center. Since then, our shelters have faced EF4 and EF5 tornadoes head-on – not in theory, but in real homes. Every single one stayed standing. That’s a record we’re proud of, and one families across the Midwest now rely on.

Secured with HILTI: the same systems used in major constructions worldwide.

A shelter’s strength depends on its foundation. That’s why every FamilySAFE shelter is anchored using HILTI systems, trusted in everything from hospitals to skyscrapers. Our installers are trained by HILTI to identify the right anchor for your specific concrete slab. Once installed, that shelter isn’t going anywhere, no matter how strong the winds get.

FamilySAFE shelters have protected families through some of the worst tornadoes on record, including EF5 storms that completely destroyed homes around them. In every case, the shelters stood firm.

More than just storm protection

Your FamilySAFE shelter is also a secure vault, panic room, and safe haven.

Every FamilySAFE shelter doubles as a secure, reinforced safe room inside your home. With triple deadbolts, steel construction, and interior release options, it’s strong enough to store valuables, firearms, and important documents. When storms roll in, that same strength gives your family the safest room in the house.

Spacious, accessible, life-saving protection

Stay high and dry: inside the house, not out in the weather.

Older “fraidy holes” sent folks outside into the rain at the last minute. A FamilySAFE tornado shelter sits inside your garage, with venting for airflow and a finish-out that keeps usable space close to full dimensions. It’s a steady, dry room you can settle into quickly to calmly wait out the weather.

Easy, fast, and clean installation

Built in our shop, set in your desired location

FamilySAFE storm shelters are prefabricated in our workshop, so installation is quick, simple, and mess-free. There’s no digging, forming, or waiting for concrete to cure. Our trained team brings the shelter fully built, anchors it to your slab, and has it ready to use, often in less time than it takes to mow the lawn.

Engineered by hand in Oklahoma

Made locally, by people who take pride in every weld.

Each FamilySAFE shelter is built by hand in our Oklahoma workshop by certified welders who take real pride in their work. Nothing’s mass-produced or outsourced. Every piece of steel is cut, welded, and finished under one roof, then inspected before it ever leaves the shop.

Have a few questions?

After more than 25 years and 30,000 shelters installed, we’ve learned what folks want to know most. If you don’t see your answer here, just reach out – we’re glad to help.

We’ve helped plenty of homeowners who used to have underground shelters, and ran into the same issues: steep steps, damp air, tricky hatches, and fumes from cars parked overhead. With a FamilySAFE shelter, you can step straight inside, stay dry, and easily open the door no matter what’s fallen outside.

The cost depends on the size, door style, and accessibility features you choose. We’ll send a full price sheet with photos and measurements, so you can see exactly what fits your space and budget.

Every shelter is built start to finish in our Oklahoma facility. Our certified welders handle everything (from the first cut of steel to the final inspection) under one roof. We don’t outsource any part of the process because we believe in knowing exactly how each shelter is made and who made it.

Once your shelter arrives, installation is quick – usually less than an hour. Depending on the season, delivery can often happen within a week. Our trained installers use professional HILTI anchoring systems to secure your unit tightly to the slab, giving it long-term stability and strength.

That’s where we do most of our work, but we’ve installed shelters across the country through our network of trusted dealers. If you’re outside those states, reach out anyway – chances are, we’ve got a nearby partner who can help.

They have, and more than once. Over a dozen of our units have taken direct hits from EF4 and EF5 tornadoes, and not one has failed or trapped anyone inside. Every single family walked out safely. It’s the kind of track record we’re proud of, and it’s the reason so many people trust our name.

It depends on the model. Our smaller 4’x4’ units work well for couples or small families, while our larger 8’x12’ models are big enough for schools, offices, or community spaces. We’ll help you choose the right size based on how many people you plan to protect.

Yes. Every FamilySAFE storm shelter is built to meet or exceed FEMA and ICC-500 standards for above-ground protection. Each model is fully engineered, tested through Texas Tech University, and backed by certified drawings for easy permitting and peace of mind.

Most families choose their garage, but we can install nearly anywhere with a solid concrete slab that meets FEMA guidelines. We’ll take a look at your space and help you decide which spot makes the most sense for your layout and lifestyle.

You’ll be safe inside. The steel shell channels the electricity down the outside and into the ground – it never passes through the interior walls. It works the same way a car keeps you safe in a storm, a principle known as the Faraday Effect.
